Civil Society Activists Developed 2026-2028 KPCSC Strategic Plan

Hosted by the Network Movement for Justice and Development in Freetown, over 30 civil society activists working on different aspects of the natural resource sector across Africa and Europe developed a comprehensive Strategic Plan for the Kimberley Process Civil Society Coalition (KPCSC) for 2026-2028 and this year’s operational plan.

The Kimberley Process (KP) was established in South Africa in 2003 as a tripartite arrangement comprising governments of diamond-producing countries, industry actors and CSOs, who have observer status only. The KP was mainly established to regulate diamonds from conflicts zone that are entering the global diamond market, hence the introduction of the KP Certification Scheme.

However, the civil society and other diamond industry actors are now agitating for a review of the definition of conflicts diamonds, taking into consideration the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights which places an obligation on states to protect communities against human rights abuses; companies to respect the human rights of communities; and governments to provide remedies where rights of communities are abused.

The new Strategic Plan focuses on four pillars: Diamond Governance/KP, Mineral Governance/Other Minerals, Empowered Communities, and Stronger KPCSC.
